Bird's of Prey (Raptors, Hawks, & Falcons) Identification & Information
Identification and information about bird's of prey (raptors, hawks, eagles, and falcons). Birds of prey are distinguished from other wild birds who mainly feed on insects, grasses, and grains because Birds of Prey primarily hunt and feed on animals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. All birds of prey have keen eyesight. "Birds of Prey have a very high density of receptors and other adaptations that maximize visual acuity. The placement of their eyes gives them good binocular vision enabling accurate judgement of distances. Nocturnal species have tubular eyes, low numbers of color detectors, but a high density of rod cells which function well in poor light" (Birdvision.Wikipedia. 2019). All Birds of Prey also have sharp hooked beaks and long sharp talons on their feet which allow them to snatch their prey in seconds and to tear the flesh with razor like precision.
"Falconiformes are also called raptors, derived from the Latin raptare, “to seize and carry off.” (In a broader sense, the name raptor is sometimes synonymous with the designation “bird of prey”).
The nocturnal birds of prey are the owls (Strigiformes). The condors (species of vultures) and the eagles are among the largest and strongest of birds" (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2019).
