Before you decide to get a pet raccoon or to take on the responsibility of raising one you need to read this. Some states have laws that bar you from keeping raccoons as pets. Make sure you check your city, county, and state ordinances before you decide to get a raccoon. Raccoons are wild animals. No matter how bonded they are with you once they hit puberty they can turn on you, basically biting the hand that feeds them. When they are babies they are adorable. If you find a baby raccoon who appears to be abandoned you need to make sure the mother is not coming back for the baby before you decide to rescue it. If you do rescue the coon you should prepare yourself by distancing yourself emotionally so that you will be able to release it back into the wild when it becomes an adult. If you have found one abandoned raccoon it most likely has brothers and sisters nearby that need your assistance too so be sure to keep checking the area where you found the first ones. If the mother doesn't return something has happened to her. Either someone trapped her, killed her, she may have been run over by a car, or she was attacked by another animal. Sometimes baby raccoons may appear to be abandoned but really are not. If their den is too hot or has been disturbed by a predator, the mother may be relocating them. Read more...

What Raccoon's Eat
Raccoons can weigh anywhere from 4 to 23 lbs according to a report by National Geographic
Raccoon's eat:
Berries
Crayfish
Eggs
Fish
Frogs
Insects
Vegetables
In the wild they tend to find their food in the waterways and even domestic raccoon's seem to have this natural instinct to hunt and wash their catch, as they can often be seen washing their food in their water dish. Raccoon's are not vegetarians, they prefer meat (as anyone who has experienced a raccoon getting into their hen house can tell you and I can tell you from personal experience raccoons brutally kill and eat chickens). Don't leave pet food outdoors at night, as this will attract raccoons. I always left dog food and cat food out at night for my pets and one night I heard growling on the porch and when I looked out the window, to my surprise, I seen a mother raccoon threatening my dog who retreated instantly. Her growling hiss was intimidating even to me from the other side of the window. Then I seen why she was being so fierce. Once she had commandeered the dog food bowl, two baby raccoons came scooting up to get some supper.

If you have a pet raccoon you will need to build it a large area, covered on all sides and the top. The base should have hardware cloth at the bottom so they cannot dig out. They will require shelter from the elements placed high up. Make sure their raccoon house, hollow log, dog house or whatever you decide to use for their den is high up off the ground and has branches or a ladder that they can climb to get into it. Provide ladders, tree branches and other things for them to climb and play on.

If You have chickens-Do NOT get a raccoon
Young raccoons like to play and adult raccoons like to hunt. A mother raccoon or a hungry raccoon will make a quick meal out of your chickens and may kill several in the process. Building a secure pen for your chickens and your raccoon could be a solution but raccoons are very smart and may find a way out of their pen and just may find a way into your chicken coop. Better to be safe than sorry and don't try to take on a raccoon if you have chickens.
What to Do If you have raccoons tearing up things or attacking your chickens
You can call your local animal control center and most will give you a trap to use so you can catch the wild raccoons and then they will come and take it so they can relocate the raccoon for you after it is caught. However, there is usually a waiting list for the live traps. Some repellents and nite lites work for awhile but if you do not move the predator lights regularly the coons will figure out they are harmless and simply find another way in. Live traps are usually reasonably priced and well worth the cost to humanely trap a raccoon.
