What kind of Collars are Best for Dogs?
The best collars for dogs are loose fitting but not so loose that your dog can slip out of them. You can also use a dog harness. Most veterinarians will also recommend getting break away collars for cats and dogs who are allowed to roam your property. A break away collar can prevent your dog from getting stuck somewhere, for example, if your dog tried to go under a bush and the collar gets hung the break away collar will open when the dog pulls on it. Break away collars are not good for dogs kept on leashes. It is best to use a dog pen rather than a chain to keep your dog from getting out of your yard. Dog chains can quickly get tangled and could prevent your dog from reaching their shelter, food and water which could be deadly on an extremely hot or cold day. Never use choke chain collars because they are inhumane (even deadly) and can cut into your dogs skin if left unchecked. Never use shock collars to train your dog. Shock collars may seem like a good way to keep your dog inside an "invisible fence" but in fact these collars are far from humane. Think of it this way, would you like to be tazer shocked every time you did something someone didn't like? Neither does your dog.
