How to Keep Outdoor Pets Warm In The Winter
Easy ways to keep your outdoor pets warm this winter and great deals on heated pet supplies. If you cannot keep your outdoor pets indoors during the winter it is very important to make sure that they have a way to get warm and to keep their water from freezing when temps go below 32 °F.
Ways to Keep Your Pets Warm In the Winter
Your outdoor pet can become frostbitten, ill or even die when temperatures drop below freezing. If you do not allow your pets indoors, make sure your pets have some place where they can get warm. A house with a door or weather covering or some type of solid shelter from the elements.
Location: Make sure your dog, cat or other pet house doorway is facing South East or South.Never North. The North wind is much colder than wind from other directions. It is best to put your dog or cat house in a sheltered area, such as inside a garage or shed with a doggie door or cat door installed, under an awning, on the South or South East side of your house or other building.
Insulating pet houses: Put bales of hay all around the outside of pet houses but not inside as it can cause breathing problems. Put plastic sheeting or coverings or tin around fenced pens. The idea is to stop the draft and wind from getting to your pets. If your dog house does not have a door you can easily make a curtain from a piece of plastic or heavy cloth, just measure the door, cut the cloth about an inch larger than the doorway, and use a small piece of wood to attach it to the top of the doorway. Most pet houses by themselves are not enough to keep your pet from freezing to death so it is important to provide a safe pet heating pad inside the pet house.
Prevent Frozen Water:Use heated pet bowls to prevent water from freezing. I have many feral cats who find their way to my home. I use blue 50 gallon food grade barrels and put 3 poultry water cups with a float 4 inches from the bottom of the barrel. Then I surround the barrels with hay bales or a tin shelter and an insulated wrap around the barrel. This method keeps the water from freezing and I only have to clean the barrel about once every few months. The poultry water cups wipe out easily with a cloth and all of my pets, 3 dogs, 10 feral cats, and 100 chickens drink from them.
Provide Heat: Use a pet heating pad for sleeping area. If your pet house is too far from an electrical source you can use a microwavable pet heater which stays warm for up to 10 hours or a good old fashioned rubber hot water bottle. I like to put several rubber hot water bottles inside my dog or cat houses so the dogs and feral cats can stay warm, it is pretty funny and cute to see the feral cats purring and snuggling up to the rubber hot water bottles at night and have even used them in my chicken and pet water barrels to prevent the water from freezing overnight and they work good.
Provide Clothing: Use pet sweaters or insulated vests for pets can be used to help retain body heat. (These should be laundered weekly). Pet sweaters should only be used when you are with your pet and should not be used outdoors as they snag on bushes, branches and just about anything. Insulated pet vests will help your pet to maintain body heat in extremely cold temperatures.
