- The pelican will use the lower part of the bill to catch fish and will hold the fish there all of the water is squeezed out of the fish. (Can squeeze out up to 3 gallons of water)
- While the pelican squeezes the water out there are usually gulls hanging around nearby (often right on the pelican's bill) with hopes of stealing a fish from the pelican.
- After the pelican drains all of the water out they will swallow the fish but they do not go into the pelican's stomach but rather are held in the esophagus
- The pouch works as a cooling system during hot weather
