Tips to Prevent Heat Stroke and Heat Stress In Pets
Heat and humidity can affect your pet's ability to stay cool during the summer. When moisture evaporates from an animals lungs it takes heat away from their body making them unable to cool themselves off. You can take your pets temperature to determine if they are having heat stroke. A dogs temperature should be below 104 degrees. To help your pets stay cooler you should:
- Use body wraps or cool pet mats-Great way to keep your pet cool and prevent heat stress
- Watch the weather-check humidity levels
- Limit your pet's exercise on hot days
- Provide plenty of shade and cool water-Dog houses get too hot. Put the dog house under a tree, hang a tarp or canopy over dog houses or bird cages to keep them cooler.
- Always watch for signs of heat stroke (see below)
- Prepare for power outages-Plan ahead of time for what you would do in the event of a power outage in your home, barn, or pet house (1).
