Horses have nutritional needs that require fresh clean water, proteins, vitamins, energy nutrients, and minerals.
Hay, Pasture, Alfalfa, Grasses-Roughage
Roughage is the bulk of a horses diet. The amount of roughage provided should contain no less than 1 percent of it's body weight in roughage. As an example, a 1,100 pound horse needs at least 11 pounds of roughage each day. It is important not to give your horse to many grains (barley, corn, milo, oats, rice, rye, wheat) as this can upset their digestive tract and cause colic. When feeding hay be sure that it is not dusty or moldy as this can cause illness.
Your horses age, weight, growth, and amount of work determines your horses dietary needs.
Here is an example for a horse which weighs 1000 pounds:

- A non working horse who has access to 20-25 lbs of hay a day should not need any grains.
- A light working horse who only works 1 to 2 hours a day needs 15 to 20 lbs of hay and 1 to 2 pounds of grain per hour of work.
- A medium working horse who works 2-4 hours a day needs 15-20 lbs of hay and 3-8 pounds of grain per hour of work.
- A heavy working horse (4-5 hours a day) needs 15 to 20 pounds of hay and 5 to 10 pounds of grain for each hour of work. (1).
