Tips I use to keep outdoor cats warm during the winter
I live out in the country, where people dump cats all the time. Many of the cats don't survive the winter and many get killed by traps set by many farmers here who set traps to protect their poultry and livestock from predators and some farmers shoot strays. The worst thing someone can do is dump their cat somewhere. The male cats who already reside in the area may kill it, people may kill it, and if it gets out in the road it can easily get run over by a car, but I digress. Most of the feral cats who come around here are hungry and looking for a warm place to sleep which many find in my tin shed filled with hay for my chicken coops. I worry for these stray cats especially during the winter months. I put old dog houses filled with hay and a heavy blanket facing South behind any building that can block the wind and I provide food and fresh water for them. I also keep a heated area on my porch available to them at night when temps drop below freezing or I just let them in my house. Many of them will not enter no matter how cold it gets but several of them will come in but will not let me come near them and as soon as I open the door in the morning they run outside.-Rev.
