Tips for Breeding Cockatiel's
Breeding your Cockatiel does not take any special skills but you will need a nesting box and a male and female Cockatiel pair. You will also need a low traffic area so the birds will be relaxed enough to mate and feel comfortable enough to start a family.
Provide a good light source for 10-12 hours a day.
Provide a nesting box with bedding. Cockatiels usually prefer straw and untreated wood shavings but sterilized coconut fiber nesting material is also becoming quite popular, however I would not recommend using coconut fiber as many bird owners who have purchased and used it have complained of birds getting caught, tangled up and even hung in it.
Once your mating pair (one male and one female) of cockatiels mate fertile eggs will be laid within 3 weeks.
Clutch size: 4-6 eggs
Incubation of cockatiel eggs (How long until hatch) is approximately 21 days.
Ideal male breeding age: 18 months old
Ideal female breeding age: 2 years
If breeding pairs are kept together they will usually start breeding early between 9-12 months of age.
It is best to keep breeding pairs separated until they are old enough to breed because breeding too early can cause health issues.

A cockatiel breeding nest box is an essential part of getting your birds to breed. Nesting boxes should be purchased or made with untreated wood as cockatiels will chew on the wood and you do not want your bird chewing on treated wood. Your cockatiels will need a nest box with enough room for both to get inside, approximately 13.4" L x 6.9" W x 7.7" inch H will do.
