How to Make Your Own Cat Litter-Free
Yes, that's right..free cat litter. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the cat litter box is full and you cannot afford to buy cat litter after paying your bills and buying cat food? Many cat owners with multiple cats have found themselves in this situation more than once. I have multiple cats that I rescue and live out in the country which is quite a drive from town and on a recent shopping trip I forgot the cat litter and the litter boxes were full. I had to think fast because cats will find other places to do their business if they have a full cat litter box. I tried scooping the litter but it was too far gone as is often the case with multiple cats. I have one cat who will use the toilet and other rescued cats who will go outdoors to do their business but some still insist on using the litter box especially at night when there is no way to get outside. I decided to try something different. I emptied the old litter out of the box but did not wash it because I wanted the cats to be able to recognize the homemade kitty litter as their litter. I shoveled up some dirt from outdoors and add one cup of wood ash (I get it from my fireplace, wood burning stove, or wood burning bbq grill) and 1/2 cup of baking soda, then I mixed the ash and baking soda with the soil and waited to see if the cats would use it. The cats used the homemade litter with no problem and interestingly the used litter does not fly out of the litter box like most commercial cat litter, is easy to scoop because it forms clumps and covers the feces completely so I do not have to see cat feces every time I scoop the litter box. The homemade cat litter has virtually no odor. I still buy cat litter but more often than not, I mix it with my homemade cat litter and it lasts much longer that way.
