Things your pet hamster needs to stay healthy:
One hamster or two?
If you get one hamster, it is important that you spend time playing with them every day because they tend to get a bit mean when they are not regularly handled. If you do not wish to handle your hamster, you may wish to consider getting two hamsters so your hamster will not get lonely. Be careful when selecting two hamsters. Unless you are trying to mate them, you may wish to get two of the same sex.
Breeding
A male and female pair of hamsters are capable of producing 10-26 babies a month. The female will prepare a nest and have her babies in it.
Separate the mating pair after the female becomes pregnant.Shortly, after the babies are born she may become violent with her male counterpart. Some female hamsters have been known to kill the male during her pregnancy or shortly after the babies are born.
Maturity
A hamster will reach maturity in 19-25 days and will then be capable of reproducing. Unless you are planning on selling hamsters it is a good idea to only get one per cage or you could end up with 250 new hamsters a year.
Sexing
Sexing your hamster is a way of determining whether your hamster is male or female. When a hamster reaches maturity the sex of the hamster will be obvious as the males have large, protruding testicles. When hamsters are younger than 20 days it may be somewhat difficult to tell the difference between males and females but an easy way to find out is to pick up the hamster and gently apply pressure with your finger on their abdomen, if two lumps (testicles) appear, your hamster is a male. If no lumps (testicles) appear your hamster is a female.
