Keep Charcoal Gel on hand at all times
If you know your pet, poultry or livestock has been poisoned, you can administer charcoal gel. This will absorb the poison. Charcoal gel containing activated hardwood charcoal and kaolin in an aqueous gel suspension can be used for accidental poisoning of dogs, cats, cattle, horses, and goats. I have had several occasions to use this gel. Once on my 3 month old puppy who got bit by a copperhead snake while I was standing nearby. The puppy laid down on it's side and started drooling and shaking. I knew I had to do something fast so I got the charcoal gel out, put some on the actual site of the bite and a small amount in the puppy's mouth. Within 10 minutes the puppy was up and moving around again and stopped drooling almost right away. On another occasion while bug bombing my house I discovered that one of the cats had snuck back in the house through a window I had forgotten to close before setting off the bombs. I normally wait 3 hours before going back in the house but I had forgotten my cell phone inside and covered my face and went back in the house where I found my cat laying on the floor shaking and drooling. I knew right away she was in trouble and really didn't think she would make it. I took the cat outdoors and went back in for the charcoal gel. I put a small amount in her mouth. Then I gave her a quick bath with warm water and dish soap to remove any poison on her fur. I gave her some milk soaked bread and a few hours later more charcoal and more milk soaked bread. She made a full recovery. I highly recommend charcoal gel for accidental poisoning in pets, poultry and livestock.

What I did When My Dog Got Bit By a Poisonous Snake
I lifted up a piece of tin outside my chicken coop, that had been on the ground for quite sometime, my small dog was right beside me, what I found under the tin took us both by surprise. It was a copperhead snake and when I lifted that tin, it appeared to be coiled and sleeping. The young dog barked and I shooed the dog away from the snake. Then I turned away to get a shovel so I could remove the snake, in the time it took to get the shovel, my little dog was gone somewhere and had been bitten by the snake but I did not realize it right away. I removed the poisonous snake and caged it, then I went looking for my dog, only to find her frothing at the mouth, laying on her side and appeared to be dead! I realized she must have been bitten by a snake. I lifted her body thinking she was dead and to my surprise she was still breathing. Living quite a way from town in a rural area I knew there was not enough time to get her to a veterinarian so I quickly took her into the house and put Activated charcoal gel in her mouth. I located the bite, quickly cut the fur from around it and put Activated charcoal gel on the bite marks, and I prayed. Then I put the pet carrier in the truck so I could take her to the vet but when I returned to get her she was not in her doggy bed where I left her! I had only been gone less than 10 minutes. I looked around and found her sitting upright by the couch, she seemed a bit disoriented, was walking fine, and was no longer foaming at the mouth. I decided to take her to the vet anyway but by the time we got there she had no more signs of being bitten by a poisonous snake. She was fine and able to return home.--Rev. Penny Dean
